St. Mary’s Church in the Northside neighborhood has always been a nostalgic, comforting landmark to me. I still remember when the church steeple was being rebuilt after the 2006 tornadoes that left so much devastation in their wake. Every time we’ve faced a natural disaster, I am reminded of how strong and united our community can be. I feel it’s possible to harness that same energy and collective spirit to advance social movements, just as we reunite to rebuild. I know this because I’ve seen proof of it.

The original piece is part of the larger body of work titled “Flyover State”, an exhibition on life and the perceptions of the Midwest.
